Confused by Your Facebook Feeds?
By: June Bachman  -  1/13/2010

When you sign into your Facebook account, in the center of the main page, you have your feeds - a list of what your friends are posting on Facebook.  There are two ways to view your feeds, News Feed and Live Feed.

We often times are asked by Facebook users, how do these feeds work?  So we thought we would take a moment to clear up the confusion!

First, which ever feed is larger font and bold ... that is the current view of the home page.  By clicking on the smaller font, not bold text, you will toggle to the other view.

NEWS FEED

The default setting when you log into your Facebook account is the NEWS FEED.  The News Feed is pretty smart, and automatically chooses for you the posts it believes will be most interesting to you, for that day.  News Feed makes its choices based on how many friends have "liked" the post, and how many have made comments on the posts.  Other items that are included in the News Feed are posts such as:

  • Events
  • Friends tagged in photos
  • Friends making friends
  • When someone becomes a fan of page
  • When a group is joined
  • RSVPs to events

LIVE FEED

The Live Feed shows you posts that are happening right now.  Live Feed is not filtered at all, and shows everything.  The Live Feed does update in real time, so as new posts are added, they will refresh and update the home page while you are viewing it.

You can control what you view in your Live Feed.  Select the Live Feed view, and scroll down to the bottom of the page.  Select "Edit Options" - a popup window will appear.  You can set the number of friends to be included in your Live Feed.  Additionally, you can add and hide friends from Live Feed.
